So what are the best jobs in IT? Of course, that’s a very subjective question because two people could be looking for very different things in a job. That’s why I was intrigued when I came across an article on the US News & World Report’s website stating what they thought the Best Jobs in Technology were. In order to rank them, however, they had to come up with a set of criteria that compared all the different types of IT jobs.
Being one of the most prevalent and fastest growing industries, there are tons of jobs in IT. So to help narrow their focus, the US News & World Report consulted with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to categorize the jobs with the greatest hiring demand. From there, they used the following set of criteria to help them rank what they thought the best jobs in IT were: the number of expected openings, career advancement opportunities, career fulfillment, and salary expectations.
Once they were able to narrow their list of IT jobs, they utilized another ranking system that measured and weighed a separate set of criteria. This list included 10 year growth plans, job prospects, work-life balance, stress levels, etc. To see just how involved they got please visit the following link, About the US News Best Jobs Ranking Methodology.
Based on these findings, the US News & World Report ranked the following jobs as the best in IT:
- Software Developer
- Computer Systems Analyst
- Web Developer
- Information Security Analyst
- Database Administrator
- Civil Engineer
- Mechanical Engineer
- IT Manager
- Computer Programmer
- Computer Systems Administrator
- Computer Support Specialist
Overall, I found the study to be pretty on point, especially since these are the positions we seem to recruit the most for. If you have time to spare, and if you are interested in what they have to say about each position, please visit their Best Technology Jobs article.
